Another plus with the rich midrange is that the cylinder temps run near equal. I was seeing 4 or 5 MPG better with this set compared to the newer one. With the smaller mains, you will get better mileage.

The midrange is great because of the rich Z-8 needle jet and the top end doesn't suffer much at all even though the mains are much smaller than the newer set. Don't get me wrong, it was perfectly acceptable, just not quite as good as the newer set. It's a wonderful carb set but I found it didn't idle quite as nicely or start as instantly or easily. You may have read that the '76-'77 carb set is best because it was the last pre-E.P.A. style mix screw and spring loaded needle meter fuel better through the idle and midrange circuits. The '78-'79 carb set does compared to the earlier 38s. In order for the engine to emit less pollutants, the carbs need to meter fuel more precisely. The mix screw as well as the slide were redesigned. Yours is the last and most modern of the BS38s. As the carb sets got newer, they were more refined. I feel you have about the best set of 38s.
